DOT Numbers

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

United States DOT (Department of Transportation) numbers are the most important requirements to move your fleet down the road or to a different state it can also be required to order transportation permits.

In spite of the fact that it is not required for all most do require this specialist. Companies that work commercial vehicles transporting travelers or pulling cargo in interstate commerce must be enlisted with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and must have a USDOT Number.

When is a DOT Number Required?

A DOT number is required in the following cases:
For commercial motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 lbs or more.
For vehicles designed or used to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation.
For vehicles designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers (including the driver), even if not for compensation.
For vehicles transporting hazardous materials in interstate commerce.

Additionally:

Most states (39 out of 50) require a DOT number for intrastate commercial motor vehicle operations as well.

The DOT number must be displayed on the side of each commercial vehicle operated by the company.
Companies must update their DOT number information biennially based on the last two digits of their number.
DOT number is required for most commercial motor vehicles operating in interstate commerce, as well as many intrastate operations, in order to track the company’s safety record and compliance information.

When is a DOT Number Not Required?

DOT number is generally not required in the following cases:
Non-Commercial Use:
Individuals operating vehicles exclusively for personal, non-commercial purposes do not need a DOT number. This includes personal vehicles, RVs, and vehicles used solely for household activities.

Intrastate Operations:

In many states, drivers engaged in intrastate transportation (within a single state) may not need a DOT number, unless their vehicles meet specific criteria like size or cargo type. However, regulations can vary by state.

Small Vehicles and Exemptions:
Certain small vehicles or those transporting non-hazardous materials may be exempt from DOT number requirements. The specific exemptions can depend on factors like vehicle weight threshold.

Farm Vehicles:
Some agricultural vehicles operated by farmers or agricultural businesses for agricultural purposes within a specific radius may be exempt from DOT number requirements.

Recreational and Hobby Use:
Vehicles used for recreational or hobby purposes, such as antique vehicles, classic cars, or vehicles used for parades/exhibitions, may not require a DOT number if they are not engaged in commercial activities.

It’s important to note that even if a vehicle or operation is exempt from the DOT number requirement, there may still be other regulations that apply, such as vehicle registration, driver licensing, and safety rules. The specific exemptions can vary by state and jurisdiction, so it’s advisable to consult with the relevant authorities or legal professionals to determine if a DOT number is required for a particular situation.
