International Registration Plan (IRP)
The International Registration Plan is an arrangement under which if a carrier transports freight across several jurisdictions, the owner is required to register the traveled miles in each state as well as pay the state’s taxes yearly. Who needs it? If your vehicle’s gross weight is 26,000 pounds or more, it has three or more axles, or it is a power unit or trailer weighing more than 26,000 pounds, you must register it under an IRP.
IRP Plates- Once the IRP and IFTA accounts are setup, you will be issued an Apportioned License Plate for the power unit as well as an Apportioned Cab Card that specifies all of the permitted states in which you may legally operate.
