What is a Louisiana Monthly Oversize Permits?

A Monthly Oversize Permit is a special-use authorization issued by the Louisiana DOTD that lets you operate vehicles/loads over legal size limits on preselected days for up to a month at a time. It does not authorize overweight movement. Typical permitted dimensions are up to 90’ overall length, 30’ front or rear overhang, 12’ width, and 14’-4” height (within permit conditions). You choose Monday–Friday, Monday–Saturday, or Monday–Sunday validity when you buy the permit.

Why do you need Louisiana Monthly Oversize Permit?

  • Recurring moves: If you run repeated oversize loads on the same corridors (plants, yards, job sites), a monthly permit avoids buying daily permits over and over.
  • Scheduling flexibility: Pick the days of the week your operation runs (e.g., Mon–Sat) so dispatch isn’t waiting on a new permit each time.
  • Compliance: Louisiana requires an OS/OW permit any time you exceed legal size; monthly permits are one of the official options.

What does the Monthly Oversize Permit cover?

  • Oversize only (not weight): Authorizes length/width/height/overhang above legal limits but not legal weight. If you are heavy, you must obtain an overweight permit separately.
  • Dimensions (typical caps): Up to 90’ long, 30’ front or rear overhang, 12’ wide, 14’-4” high, subject to route and exclusions listed on your permit.
  • Days of use: Valid on your chosen schedule—Mon–Fri, Mon–Sat, or Mon–Sun; some holidays or specific days may be excluded.

Note on Interstates & special commodities: Louisiana rules allow various permit types (monthly, annual, single-trip) and specify when certain permits can or cannot be used on Interstate highways and for certain commodities. Your route plan must follow those rules exactly.

What’s the purpose of this permit?

  • Reduce administrative friction for carriers making frequent oversize moves.
  • Provide predictable compliance windows (specific days each week) so shippers can plan production and deliveries.
  • Enhance safety and oversight by ensuring oversize travel meets Louisiana’s dimensional, escort, and holiday restrictions.

What is not included?

  • No overweight authority. A separate overweight permit is required if your axle/gross weights exceed legal limits.
  • Possible holiday/curfew limits. Certain dates or conditions (e.g., listed holidays) may be blacked out.
  • Local streets: City permits may still be required inside municipal limits (for example, New Orleans runs its own oversize permitting and escorts).

Related monthly permits you might need

Louisiana also offers monthly permits for House Movers Equipment, Oilfield Special Equipment, and a 30-day Pleasure Craft option all with their own conditions (width caps, Interstate limits, night travel allowances, and escort triggers). If your equipment falls in these categories, we’ll match you to the right permit.

How long is it valid?

Monthly oversize permits are issued for preselected days within the month (weekday/6-day/7-day options). State rules also recognize monthly durations within the permit program. We’ll tailor the selection to your operation’s calendar.
