What Qualifies as Oversize and Overweight Permits ?

A load is classified as oversize when it exceeds the standard legal trucking dimensions/size or weight limits set by state or federal regulations. These rules are designed to protect highways, bridges, and ensure the safe movement of traffic:

  • Width: Any load wider than 8 feet 6 inches is considered oversize in every U.S. state
  • Height: The maximum legal height varies depending on the state:
In most states, the limit is 13 feet 6 inches.
Several states allow up to 14 feet.
In Alaska, the maximum legal height is 15 feet.
  • Weight:
The federal standard maximum gross vehicle weight is 80,000 pounds, which includes the truck, trailer, and any load.
While 80,000 pounds is the standard in most states, some states set different limits or have specific exceptions for certain highways or with special permits. It is important to check regulations before traveling.
  • Length: The typical overall length of a tractor-trailer combination varies from state to state. Certain routes may allow longer combinations, but non-designated roads usually have stricter limits, so checking regulations before travel is necessary:
Most states set the maximum trailer length for semi-trucks at 53 feet.
The overall legal length for tractor-trailer combinations generally ranges from 65 to 75 feet, depending on the state and route.
  • Overhang:
The general rule allows 3 feet of front overhang and 4 feet of rear overhang without a permit.
However, overhang laws vary by state, some states strictly enforce these limits and require permits for even small excesses, while others are more lenient.

If a load or vehicle exceeds these legal limits in dimensions (height, width, length & overhang), or weight, the carrier must obtain an oversize/overweight permit to move it legally.
